Have you even taken a moment to figure out how much time you actually spend in a day alone with your thoughts? I know that most people don’t really do much thinking even though they believe that they do. What do I mean by alone with your thoughts? I mean, no television, no radio or music of any kind, no internet, no people talking, no MP3 player, nothing whatsoever to distract you from your own thoughts. Yeah I know, not much eh.
Most of us do not even realize that we can’t stand not to have the radio on in the car, or in the house we always have either the radio or the TV on. For many people the only time they spend without those ‘background noises’ is when we hop into bed and try to fall asleep instantly and yet many of us spend that time praying or going over to do lists mentally.
So we end up not doing much thinking at all. And then we start to rely on others to doo our thinking for us; political pundits to tell us who to vote for, the news to tell us what to be upset about or critics to tell us what movies we should love. I could go on but I think you get my drift-we avoid spending time with ourselves and when we are all alone with ourselves we are uncomfortable. Don’t believe me? Tomorrow, turn off the radio as you drive to work. If you start to feel too uncomfortable turn the radio back on. Do this every day and gradually lengthen the time that the radio is off. Use the time to think-but of course dwell on good things, pleasant things and things that serve you. You will soon find that you are not only more at peace with yourself but you are also more at peace with the world.
